President Bola Tinubu convened an emergency meeting with Governors of the Federation at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, are among the attendees. Although the agenda was not disclosed, it is understood that the meeting was called to address the escalating cost of food items, insecurity, and other economic challenges.
President Tinubu has instructed his economic team to seek solutions to the issues at hand. Additionally, the Special Presidential Committee on Emergency has been authorized to release approximately 102,000 metric tons of assorted items including rice, maize, and millet. The meeting aims to devise strategies to mitigate the rising costs and security concerns.
The situation has sparked protests by women and youth, leading to increased criminal activities and heightened tension. Governors from several states including Ekiti, Delta, Borno, Lagos, Kwara, Nasarawa, and Edo were observed entering the Council Chambers.
Governors from Yobe, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Plateau, Kaduna, Sokoto, Niger, Taraba, Adamawa, Cross River, Ogun, and Enugu were also in attendance. Following the emergency meeting, the monthly National Economic Council (NEC) meeting, chaired by Vice President Shettima, is scheduled to take place promptly.
